Today’s post is of a more personal nature; I will explain why I am interested in weight loss. If you have read My Story, you know I am a physician; but I am also a human being. I also struggle with weight issues. I know first hand about the yo-yo effect; my weight has bounced around like anyone probably reading this site.
It all starts with genetics. My parents were not skinny, and didn’t exercise. I was a “husky child”, boy I hated that term. We had sugary cereal, pancakes, or coffee cake for breakfast. Dinner was normal food but we always had desert. Sound familiar to you?
How about those helpful relatives. My dad would always say I don’t care how much you eat as long as it’s meat and potatoes. Not necessarily sound dietary advise. His mother was originally from Russia. Grandma was quite the cook; she would always say eat, eat, eat up. She was loving and nice and it made her feel good to see us eat her cooking.
Fast forward to high school. I started working out, grew a few inches, 6 ft 1 inch to be exact. I would attempt to control my appetite, but the activity of youth would allow me to eat hardily and keep my weight down. I learned this lesson well on the transition from medical school to my internship.
As a medical student I would play racquetball 4 time a week. It not only helped blow off steam but calories as well. As an intern 12-15 hour days, no exercise and cafeteria food caused the weight to fly back on. I never met a starch or desert I did not like. Can you say yo-yo? I stopped exercising but didn’t stop eating. Predictably the weight zoomed on plus that nasty additional 10 % I’ve been talking about.
I managed to keep the weight off again until my mid forties. Decreased activity coupled with a slower metabolism and the weight started creeping up again. Then came the big event topped the big five 0.
Let me suffice to say that an arthritic hip slows down your activity level; I found that out when I had my hip replaced this year. Recovery was slow and painful. When I feel sorry for myself, I like many others, like to eat. Trail mix did the deed this last time. A hip replacement and grazing cost me a cool 25 pounds of additional weight again.
I have probably lost over 100 lbs in my lifetime, just couldn’t seem to manage to keep it all off. So I learned another tough lesson, the older you get the harder it is to lose weight.
When I was younger I could seemingly drop 10-20 lbs in a month or two. That was a bad thing, because I learned to yo-yo my weight at a young age. I continued that bad habit until this past year.
So the doctor in me finally came through. This year I started researching programs to help people lose weight; that got me motivated to lose the weight again. I also see my patients struggling with their weight. I would guess somewhere around 66 % of my patients have BMI’s that qualify them as obese. I thought, how can I expect them to lose weight if I won’t keep my weight down as well.
That is the selfish reason for this website. The other reason is I refer patients here instead of repeating the same old speech over and over again, in the office. I hope that if they read what I have to say they will remember it.
