Obesity and The Diabetes Epidemic

UnitedHealth Says Diabetes Will Cost $3.4 Trillion Over the Next Decade. This was a headline a few weeks ago in the news feed.

Another headline read: Resistance Training, Aerobic Combo Superior for Diabetes Control.

Diabetics who perform a combination of resistance and aerobic exercises were found in a study to have better overall blood sugar control when compared to inactivity or either type of exercise alone. The study is the first to target the best form of exercise for diabetes control that the researchers note has clinical and public health implications.

HbA1c levels are a measurement of how well a patients’ diabetes is controlled over a 3 month period. The goal is to keep the value less than 7%. Performing resistance training in combination with walking or other aerobic activity improved HbA1c levels -0.34%, but only for the group given both types of exercises.

Let’s back up and look at why we have such an increase in new Diabetics in this country.

The first reason is the glucose level that we diagnose diabetes at is lowered to 100 as opposed to 140 when I started my practice 26 years ago.

The second is self inflicted; the level of obesity is at an all time high in America. Type 2 Diabetes, or adult onset, is the most prevalent form and obesity is the ignition switch that gets the ball rolling.

Type 2 diabetics make enough insulin, they suffer from insulin resistance. This means that the bodies cells become resistant to insulin and they can’t transport the glucose into the cells. This causes glucose to build up in the blood.

Think of it this way insulin needs to bind to a receptor to get the glucose into your cells. The receptors are jambed much like a broken key in a door lock.

When a type 2 Diabetic loses weight the broken key is removed from the lock and glucose can once again get into the cell and the blood glucose is lowered because your body once again can burn the glucose as fuel.

So the key to successful treatment of diabetes is two fold. You have to eat less sugar and calories in general and you have to lose weight and therefore fat.

I hope you found this explanation of how weight and diabetes are intertwined and you can lessen your health risks from diabetes.
